Lots of people have commented on this story and the majority of them, quite predictably, either say this is a terrible idea or a great one. Me, I’m neutral at the moment. All the pros that people list about books are just as true as the hopes that people describe for this experiment. I’m more interested in looking back on this in, say, 10 years to see what’s happened.
There is one thing I will say now, however. When I hear about students who are not using materials in the library, I see faculty who are either not creating assignments that require them to do research or are accepting just about anything for sources. If that’s the case here, then it won’t matter if they have a library with a million print books in it or a digital library with every bell and whistle available. Students still won’t use the resources.
