According to this story, the NHL is getting ready for another big Twitter push for the start of its season. Why? Hard to say, but I’d be willing to bet that it’s got something to do with the fact that they have to work a little harder to reach potential/current fans. Unlike the NFL (No Fun League) and to a large extent MLB, the NHL can’t just take its fans for granted and ban them from Twittering (or commenting on FB or whatever other social media they like to use) about their teams during games.

Princeton Students: Kindle 'Disappointing, Difficult to Use'

Princeton Students: Kindle 'Disappointing, Difficult to Use':
OK, so this is from Fox and it only contains the impressions of a handful of people, but Amazon can’t be happy with Princeton student’s assessment of the Kindle. As you’ve no doubt heard before, there are two sides to every story as this blog post shows.

What the important takeaway? Using social media like Twitter can enhance a player/team’s image, but it can also destroy it just as fast. Robert Henson won’t be cut for his dumb Tweets, but it’s certainly not going to enhance his reputation with the fans either.

Understanding Users of Social Networks

Understanding Users of Social Networks:
“Online social networks are most useful when they address real failures in the operation of offline networks,” or at least that’s the opinion of Dr. Mikolaj Jan Piskorski. In this HBS Working KNowledge post, Piskorski talks about his work studying social network users and their habits. One of his findings is that photos are huge. “Seventy percent of all actions are related to viewing pictures,” according to his research. He also gives a little insight into Twitter and strategic ways to use the information he’s uncovered.

For the love of Flip Video Cameras

For the love of Flip Video Cameras:
A fellow Librarian pointed me in the direction of this post from Jill Bateman’s blog on shooting video. Social Networking

I wrote in an earlier post about the growing clash between social networking and traditional businesses, but here’s an update that talks more about the clash between social networking and the sports industry. I’ll leave it up to you to decide if the efforts by ESPN, the NFL, etc are wise or not, but I’m a firm believer that the harder they try to squeeze this phenomena, the more it’s going to get away from them.
